Dang... I’ll give you $10.01

Too be fair, why not put the whole entire price you want and not play games?

I have heard of cars being sold for that much. I have gotten a car for free.

Technically some cars should be worth negative dollars if not for the fact that they bottom out at the value of the parts or scrap, whichever is better.

Nice price. There’s probably a vape pen worth $10 in the console.

My two biggest pet peeves in one ad. Screenshots of pictures on a phone, then uploading the pictures from the phone, and snap chat pictures. The second one is really minor but for some reason it just rubs me wrong.

Jealous of that pole barn though.

Apparently at one point the seller and his bank thought it was reasonable.

Granted, that was probably before the rod knock, but how the hell do you end up owing over $10k on a 13 year old Subie?

He’s a guy with a loan on a 13-year old STI on its second engine, that sounds like *exactly* the demographic who would think it’s worth 10 grand.

Blew up the first motor at 100k and now the replacement engine needs to go at only 54k? This car has lived a very hard life and I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I feel sorry for the bank.. In a couple of months they’ll send someone to collect this pile, and will be shocked to find out their collateral is worth $400. But then again, they should of probably never given this guy a loan in the first place. His interest rate has to be over 12% for any bank to take that gamble.

That’s honestly much less than they go for in good working order! Mine is 12 years old (an ‘06) and I paid $13.5k for it via a loan. Granted mine is a bit cleaner, a one owner Cali car, and is lower mileage but still. STis sell all day for $20k plus.

Kinja'd!!! Wrong Wheel Drive (41%) > duurtlang
01/18/2018 at 12:27

Kinja'd!!!0

Thats perfectly reasonable (if it werent on a second engine that had a knock). I took a $13.5k loan out on mine. I didnt pay any cash and got a 3% loan. Sure, that one is a pile considering the condition. But mine is also 12 years old and 136k miles. These just go for stupid money. Mine was actually considered an excellent deal considering the market.

I think the most questionable part of this ad is that the mods arent even listed. While I wouldnt buy a Subaru with mods regardless, at least knowing what is in there could be of help. When someone just says “includes mods” I assume stupid cheap ebay parts that just detract from the value. Considering the stupid low offset wheels and questionable paint, I can only imagine what kind of dumb mods he has done. But if it were a short list of Perrin equipment, dyno sheets, and tasteful stuff, I wouldnt immediately dismiss it at least.

I’m shocked at that - I know they’re good cars, but I would have thought $10-$13k for a good one?

Lol of course the engine issues are an immediate red flag for me to throw out the ad, regardless of cost. I dont buy actually broken things, its just not my cup of tea. I just meant the part that regardless of it being broken, would make me not even look into it further.

Kinja'd!!! Wrong Wheel Drive (41%) > WilliamsSW
01/18/2018 at 12:50

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha yeah they cost way more than I was expecting too! I was having trouble because regular WRXs with over 100k miles were listing for $10k+! After having driven a couple of them, I just didnt find this worth that money AT ALL. And apparently, they go for WAY more in places that actually see snow like the PNW or the northeast. In general, it was damn near impossible to find an unmodded STi but the ones I did find were easily $20k and up. The only others in the 10-15k price range were either questionable or nearing 200k miles. I got lucky to find mine in the shape it was.

Now of course I could still run into issues but so far so good! I did replace the starter, got new tires put on, and I noticed I am losing some oil but nothing too bad yet. The only questionable things I found were the battery not tightened (connections were like hand tight at best) and some curb rash on some wheels. But I am being really nitpicky at that point.

Kinja'd!!! Wrong Wheel Drive (41%) > vondon302

The biggest concern will be rust of course. These cars tend to rust pretty easily and obviously this has seen some winter use in a salty area. If somehow this car is rust free, then the next concern would be maintenance. When was the timing belt last done? How about the head gaskets? Spark plugs and other annoying but regular labor? From what I have read, the 2006-2007 models seem to be the best to go for in terms of reliability and performance. Compared to a P71 though, it will be much less comfortable and get worse gas milage, plus have to run premium. However, if everything checks out and you like how it drives, then that certainly seems like a listing worth following up on. I like the lack of mods and the generally good aesthetic condition (at least as far as CL pics go).

Yeah I mean if maintained well, I see no issues with the mileage. Its not like these things are all that complicated. Assuming it doesnt run out of oil, it shouldnt blow up. But people tend to forget about that... And at least in my STi I have been pretty hard pressed to get anything more than 20mpg. Even with driving a tank 100% highway I still only managed about 21mpg (although my average speed was ~85). Usually I get about 17-18 with mostly canyon roads. I imagine a WRX will do slightly better than that but its just not an efficient powertrain lol.

I realize I’m agonizing over the wrong detail, but the last line infuriates me: “Don’t bother offering me less cause I can’t do it do to my bank.”

Then I bet you’re going to have an exceedingly difficult time selling this, even if you might resign yourself to taking less. Also, it’s “due” in the second instance, you uneducated moron. All the previous red flags in this ad could be absent up until that point, yet that error might cause me to question how smart the seller was concerning the maintenance of the car. The wealth of problems admitted elsewhere just makes it harder for me to shake my reflexive assumptions based on his grammar mistakes.

Kinja'd!!! aquila121 > Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)
01/18/2018 at 19:06

Kinja'd!!!1

My based-on-nothing guess for the mods would start with a boost controller (cranked up to 11) and jack shit done to help the fuel system to support it. Wouldn’t that make the engine knock in short order? And idiots in STIs would say “moar boost=moar better,” right?

Agreed, I realize he’s trying to get 10 grand so that he comes somewhere near paying off a big chunk of the loan, and that doesn’t mean anyone’s necessarily stupid enough to pay what he’s asking. We’re assuming that the seller has no other means to resolve the loan without this ludicrously lofty sale amount, so I think just about everyone involved is going to be disappointed.

One, the seller, since I doubt anyone’s going to bite at a busted, sketchy, 13-year-old STI with questionable mods and a knocking engine. If he can’t scrounge up a buyer at 10K, that probably means he can’t get funds to acquire the title and actually make the sale, right? So either he keeps making payments on a broken car, or he defaults. Next, the bank will be disappointed because when they say screw it and come to repossess the car, they’ll find out that it’s not worth much. Three, whoever picks this up at auction will likely have a lot to deal with.

Makes me glad that though none of my cars are pretty, in perfect running condition, quick, or desirable, they’re paid off.
